Wendy Buiter, Dutch Contemporary Artist

Wendy Buiter is a Dutch contemporary artist based in Rotterdam. Her work explores modern femininity, beauty, identity and power through highly stylized female portraiture. Drawing on the visual languages of fashion, cosmetics, Art Deco and fine jewellery, Buiter constructs women not as conventional portraits, but as autonomous figures of presence, elegance and quiet authority.

Practice and Materials

Buiter’s practice centres on the female figure as a site where identity, beauty and power are constructed. Rather than record a sitter’s likeness, she develops stylized protagonists whose poses, expressions and adornment examine how women are seen, how they see themselves and how they choose to be seen.

She works across mixed media on paper, oil on linen and hand-assembled collage. Layered drawing, paint and selected materials give the surface depth, while line, colour and controlled simplification keep the image direct. Fashion photography, haute couture, cosmetics, Art Deco and fine jewellery provide a visual vocabulary rather than a decorative theme.

Themes

Beauty in Buiter’s work is not treated as ornament, but as a structure through which identity, aspiration and power are communicated. Glamour becomes a visual code: one that can be inhabited, questioned and rewritten.

Her work is informed by the female gaze. The women she constructs do not perform for the viewer; they occupy the image on their own terms. Their authority is deliberate but quiet, held in posture, expression, colour and controlled distance.

“My work originates from the language of fashion and beauty, the same visual codes I once helped construct. I am not painting women as ideals, but painting the ideals themselves, to understand why we still need them.”

Each painting operates as a constructed identity, neither a conventional portrait nor an anonymous ideal. Individual features, archetypes and cultural references are brought together to ask how femininity is seen, authored and remembered.

“My work originates from the language of fashion and beauty, the same visual codes I once helped construct. I am not painting women as ideals, but painting the ideals themselves, to understand why we still need them.”

Through this lens, beauty becomes a structure, not decoration. A system of meaning. A form of power.

The female gaze, in Buiter’s work, is not observational but declarative. It defines how women are seen, and more importantly, how they choose to be perceived.

Each painting operates as a constructed identity, precise, intentional, and aware of its own cultural weight.

“My portraits are blueprints for a post-patriarchal world.”

Background

Before devoting herself fully to art, Buiter worked internationally as a make-up artist and later founded and led Beautypartner for nearly a decade. That experience sharpened her understanding of how image, colour and surface shape ideas of femininity. It remains visible in her work, not as biography for its own sake, but as critical knowledge of the visual codes she now examines through painting and collage.

Buiter lives and works in Rotterdam, where she develops original works on paper, oil paintings, collages and hand-finished editions.

“There are women who do not enter a room to be seen. And yet, something shifts when they do. Not because they ask for attention, but because attention reorganizes itself around them. I have always been drawn to that presence. Not as something visible, but as something felt.

I don’t paint women in the literal sense. I paint femininity, not as a fixed image, but as a state of being. It cannot be captured realistically, because it does not belong to the surface. It lives in nuance, in tension, in contradiction.

In my work, I try to hold that space. The quiet authority. The softness that is not weakness. The composure that comes from knowing exactly who you are, without needing to explain it. These are not portraits. They are impressions of a presence that cannot be fully defined, only recognized.

A woman who is warm, yet unreachable. Elegant, but never fragile. Present, without ever trying to prove she belongs. There is a kind of power that does not announce itself. It doesn’t ask to be understood. It simply exists, and is recognized by those who know.

That is what I return to, again and again. Not the image of a woman, but the essence that lingers long after she has left. And perhaps that is what makes her unforgettable.”
