Hello, dear readers!
I am thrilled to share a meaningful moment from April 2024, when I had the honor of contributing to the Wiesje Benefit Gala. This event holds a special place in my heart, not just because of the incredible cause it supports, but also because it provided me with an opportunity to give back in a way that feels profoundly personal and impactful.
For those who may not be familiar, the Wiesje Benefit Gala is an annual event organized by the Wiesje Foundation, a wonderful organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with dementia in Suriname. Their work touches countless lives, offering support, resources, and hope to many families navigating the challenges of this condition.
This year, I decided to donate one of my artworks, “Wayana,” to the auction held during the gala evening. “Wayana” is a piece that holds significant meaning for me, named after a Surinamese tribe as suggested by one of my dear friends from Suriname. The Wayana tribe is known for its rich culture and deep connection to nature, and through this artwork, I aimed to capture the essence of their vibrant spirit and resilience.
The gala evening was nothing short of magical. Surrounded by passionate individuals and a community united by the desire to make a difference, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. The energy in the room was palpable, filled with hope and determination. As the auctioneer began to describe “Wayana,” I could see the audience’s curiosity and interest. When the final bid was placed, and “Wayana” was sold, it was a moment of immense pride and joy.
Knowing that my art could play a small part in supporting the Wiesje Foundation’s mission is incredibly fulfilling. Art has always been a medium through which I express my emotions and connect with others, and to see it contribute to such a noble cause is a testament to the power of creativity and community.
I believe that giving back is not just an act of generosity, but a responsibility we all share. It is through these acts of kindness and support that we can create a ripple effect of positive change. The funds raised from the auction of “Wayana” will help the Wiesje Foundation continue its essential work, providing care and improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia.
To everyone who attended the gala, participated in the auction, or supported the event in any way – thank you. Your contributions are making a real difference, and together, we are helping to build a brighter future for many.
As an artist, and as a member of this global community, I am committed to using my talents and resources to support causes that matter.
The Wiesje Benefit Gala was a beautiful reminder of the power of collective action and the impact we can have when we come together with a shared purpose.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. Let us continue to support and uplift each other, creating a world where compassion and generosity lead the way.
With gratitude,
Wendy Buiter
