The Composed Worlds

In Les Mondes Composés, each painted muse becomes the centre of a world entirely her own.

These works begin with portraiture, the female face and figure that have always formed the heart of Wendy Buiter’s practice, but extend far beyond the traditional portrait. Drawing and painting are layered with carefully selected fragments of botanicals, jewellery, fashion, poetry, history and the cosmos. Together, these elements create intricate visual environments in which every detail carries meaning.

They are not simply collages. Each work is drawn, painted and composed as a complete mixed-media artwork. The collaged fragments do not merely decorate the portrait; they expand its narrative. They reveal something of the muse’s inner life: what she remembers, desires, collects, protects and imagines.

Les Mondes Composés

A herbarium may become a private archive. A constellation may suggest an unwritten destiny. Jewels, handwritten words and historical references appear as traces of lives lived, or lives still waiting to unfold. Each composition moves between the intimate and the infinite, between the woman we see and the world she contains.

The title Les Mondes Composés refers both to the construction of these layered worlds and to Buiter’s belief in beauty as compositional power. Beauty is not presented as something passive or merely decorative. It emerges through the deliberate bringing together of colour, form, symbolism, history and imagination.

Every muse inhabits her own universe. Every element has been chosen. Every world has been composed.
